World Press Photo: The Last Icon: The Impact of Imagery on the 20th & 21st Centuries

Sun 25 August, 10:30-12:00, The Scottish Parliament, £5/£3.50

How is our history and contemporary life portrayed in photographic images? This is the question that intrigues Dr Martijn Kleppe of Erasmus University, Rotterdam, and a former project worker at World Press Photo. Employing a multidisciplinary approach embracing methods from history, communication science, visual culture studies, art history and information science, Kleppe looks at the ingredients that make an iconic photograph. Joining Martijn to discuss what makes an iconic photograph and its relation to mobile media in the 21st Century will be Stephen Mayes, Former Managing Director of VII Photo Agency and Secretary to the jury for World Press Photo, as well as Olivier Laurent, Acting Deputy Editor of British Journal of Photography.
