The Festival of Politics is pleased to host the world's premier photojournalism exhibition - The World Press Photo Exhibition 2011. Featuring the winning photographs from this year's World Press Photo competition, the exhibition documents subjects from across the globe, ranging from coverage in war zones and natural disasters, to portraiture, nature and sports photography.
To link in with the World Press Exhibition, the Festival of Politics will be hosting a programme of events that examines the work of, and issues faced by, photojournalists. Full details of these events are given below. Further information on World Press Photo can be found at the following website.

Raised by Women: A Photographic Essay on Female Dominated Communities

Anastasia Taylor-Lind is a British photojournalist who is part of the VII Photo Agency mentor programme working for publications such as GEO Germany, The Telegraph Magazine and The Sunday Times Magazine. A prestigious awards winner for her documentary work, join Anastasia as she presents her travels which have seen her living with the PKK in the Kurdish mountains, documenting the Cossack resurgence over the Southern Russian steppes and along the trans-Siberian railway with model scouts in their search for supermodels of the future. Chaired by Olivier Laurent, News and Online Editor, British Journal of Photography.

From revolution to representation - the impact of social media on politics
Saturday 27 August, 12:30 - 13:30, Committee Room 1, FREE.
Professional photographers and new media commentators will consider the impact of social media on the world of politics and social change in two very different parts of the world. The panel will include photojournalist and World Press Photo 2011 winner Ed Ou who documented the recent revolution in Egypt, looking at how social media was used to galvanise support. Chaired by Patrick Harvie MSP, panellists include 2010 World Press Photo winner Simon Roberts, who was commissioned as the official Election Artist for the 2010 UK General Election and Christian Payne who is actively contributing to the online debates surrounding the use of new media and photography.

Covering Conflict: the role of the photographer and artist
Saturday 27 August, 17:30 - 18:30, Committee Room 3, FREE.
Join renowned photographer photojournalist Anastasia Taylor-Lind and artist Mark Neville as they re-examine the role of the photographer or artist in covering conflict, looking at the associated risks and dangers, at the impact of conflict both on those caught in its midst, and the impact on the wider civilian population. Does photography and art present the news or highlight issues in the hope that people will act, or simply stand as bodies of evidence to tell the world what happened? Chaired by Allan Little, Special Correspondent with the BBC.
