The song of the people has been a powerful force in South Africa. Music has the power to protest, to encourage and to proclaim a vision for a better world. This workshop, led by Mairi Munro of the Iona Community, is an opportunity to learn and sing together some songs from the apartheid and post-apartheid era. No musical expertise necessary. You may even find your hips swaying!

Odd Times At Edinburgh

Dr Anne Lorne Gillies

Scottish Speaker of the Year 2005 and distinguished singer, writer and broadcaster, Dr Anne Lorne Gillies, performs for the first time ever in a Parliament her acclaimed one-woman play with songs about the life and times of Lady Nairne, by far Scotland’s most popular song-writer after Robert Burns and a fervent Jacobite. The play also examines the “odd” political situation of Edinburgh in the year 1822 shortly after the visit to Scotland of King George IV.
