| Dennis Canavan discusses his political career and the causes he holds dear with Deputy Presiding Officer Trish Godman MSP in the Parliament's Main Chamber. Formerly a long-serving Labour MP, Canavan was elected as an independent Member of the Scottish Parliament from 1999-2007. A long-time supporter of devolution, he championed many issues, such as the abolition of corporal punishment, the promotion of sport, and the designation of St Andrew’s Day as a national holiday in Scotland. |
Clare Short, the Independent MP for Birmingham Ladywood, called on extensive knowledge gained during her 26-year parliamentary career to talk about a variety of issues in a lively discussion on the third day of the 2009 Festival of Politics. In a session chaired by Deputy Presiding Officer Alasdair Morgan MSP, Ms Short discussed topics including the war in Iraq, Cabinet government, proportional representation and female representation in Westminster. She also took a variety of questions from members of the audience on subjects including devolution and voting systems. |
