Professor Tom Devine delivered an enlightening lecture on "Scotland, Diaspora and Empire: Exploring the Impact". In the lecture Prof Devine outlined the "evidential reality that this small nation had a disproportionate impact on the worlds of philosophy, medicine, education and missionary work". In an entertaining question-and-answer session, chaired by Deputy Presiding Officer Alasdair Morgan, the professor challenged an audience member to 'fisty cuffs', contemplated the impact of only allowing 0.2% of the population the right to vote, and advocated the establishment of 'poker clubs' across Scotland. |
The Politics of Festival examined the politics that surround and suffuse festivals, and how festivals interact with the world of politics. Politicians provide material and a target for artists and performers; funding for festivals is a recurrent subject of political debate, with politicians looking to festivals to deliver social and economic as well as cultural benefits; the political focus on festivals is sometimes welcome, sometimes not; and then there are the internal politics of festivals. The event was chaired by Cathy Peattie MSP (right) and included Chris Bartter (left) from Unison Scotland and Ruth Wishart from The Herald. |
